One of the longest-running events on WCTV is the Annual Wilmington Rotary Club Auction. That tradition continues as the Rotarians take over the WCTV studio and fill it seemingly to the brim with a host of wonderful items up for bid. Local residents and businesses help the Rotary Club by donating the items
that are put up for bid. In addition to the television auction, the Rotary Club also holds a live auction the following night at a local
function hall, such as the Wilmington Knights of Columbus.
Rotarians, along with students in the InterAct program, need a
full day to set up the studio and auction items. Calls are taken for bidding by a bank of operators who
are in another part of town while the auction is actually on. The phone benk is usually set up in a place of business used by a Rotarian.
The white boards on the wall behind the hosts are used to keep track of the bids given on specific auction items. Hanging these boards is one of the more time-consuming set-up jobs. A lot of people put in major effort to ensure that these auctions come off just right
year after year. Rotary Club members spend long hours to coordinate auction items, set-up and prep the studio, and line up training times with WCTV
staff for members of the production team who need a refresher course. Here’s a look at that event hosted by John Doherty and Bob Peterson... (Photos courtesy of Alexander Rodesky)
